I am not sure I remember a season with so many young quaterbacks looking to take over the reigns as QB1, or just as many in their second season proving they belong in fanatsy discussions, or bound for a sophmore slump. This year that list includes - Vince Young, Jamarcus Russell, Brodie Croyle, Tavaris Jackson, Jay Cutler, Brady Quinn, Jason Campbell, Matt Leinhart.
Tier 1 - Draft as QB2 and hope they do more
Vince Young - Obviously talented and plays off his mobility so well. Doesn’t have a great cast around him, so it is not out of the question that while there is no doubt he is now the starter, he could struggle in a number of games. Running yards and TD’s keep his fantasy totals up, so he is a solid QB2 on fantasy rosters, and if he gets hot can be inserted in favorable matchups.
Matt Leinhart - Not as talented as young but has such a better cast to play with. No way Leinhart doesn’t improve in his first full season throwing to Fitzgerald, Boldin, and have more protection for Edge to run behind.
Jason Campbell - Less stats but consistent each week, and should have a little more confidence this season. Talent pool hasn’t changed much, but he has two taleneted RB’s on the team, and should learn to use Santana Moss more this season. Is a solid QB2 on fantasy rosters.
Tier 2: Slated as QB1 heading into Camp but question marks
Brodie Croyle - May not be ready, but KC wants to build around youth now, not a 34 year old Huard. That being said, if Croyle can’t get it done in the first few games, I don’t think the leash is very long. His time as a starter is probably dependent on the status of LJ. LJ can make a lot of mistakes go away by just giving him the ball, but if he isn’t playing….. I would draft both QB’s and watch the updates weekly, one should emerge as a decent backup for your team.
Jay Cutler - Could be one of the bigger fantasy surprises this season, but struggled with decisin making and interceptions as a rookie. He has a cannon of an arm, and seems to be in synch with Javon Walker. If Denver can keep their running game up to par (as they always do), the field will open up and I expect Cutler to be a solid QB2, pushing for starts as QB1 on your fantasy roster. Very good keeper draft pick for those leagues.
Tier 3 - Avoid, Avoid
Tavaris Jackson - Didn’t show much in his limited time last year and doesn’t have any new receivers to help this year. We haven’t seen a fantasy happy QB in Minny since Culpepper and Moss were connecting. Avoid drafting here.
Jamarcus Russell - If your in a keeper or dynasty league then no, do not avoid at all costs because Jamarcus has too good of an arm not to have an impact at some point - BUT - this will not be the year. Rookie QB’s normally struggle even with a good offense. Russell has so little to work with this year, unless Curry is reborn and manages to play more than 2 games without getting hurt, or Gabriel has a breakout season, or maybe if Porter gets off the bench (if he isn’t waived already). Too many questions - no need to draft here if you are in a one season league.
