While your goalie position only takes up a fraction of your roster, they normally account for 40% of your league categories. Ensuring you get quality starts is essential to winning on a given week, or over the long haul in roto games. This is the most recent update on goalies around the league:
Martin Biron - Biron was nowhere near a top fantasy pick this season but he is completely on fire with two recent shutouts, and 1 goal games in between. The Flyers have been a joke for a number of seasons, but after spending a little money they are playing a high scoring up tempo game and it is working, with Biron as the main benefactor right now. If you own Biron get on your league message board talking about all the research you did for this amazing pick.
Kari Lehtonen- Well those of you who took Kari Lehtonen in the early rounds, expecting big things from this kid can’t be too happy right now. After coming up lame the other night, he has been diagnosed with a groin strain and already on the IR. Lehtonen has a history of groin muscle issues, so this is not good news for his owners. He is expected to be out awhile, and no goalie rushes back from a groin injury for fear of hurting it right away again. The good news is Lehtonen was playing horrible anyway, and Hedberg if you can get him, might be an upgrade at this point.
Manny Fernandez- Who expected the Bruins to be 4-2 (nearly 5-1 had they held on against Anaheim) 6 games into the season. Ok, it’s only six games, but still the Bruins have attempted to give away all their talent the last couple years without bringing any in, with the exception of Manny Fernandez this summer. Well guess what, it is n’t Manny who is winning the games between the pipes and playing stellar, Tim Thomas is back on his game. If you are a Manny owner, I would grab Thomas and watch the expected starts each night, because this looks headed towards a heavy platoon.
Thomas Vokoun- Hurt again, big surprise. Vokoun is solid, but gets minor injuries constantly. This one is just a sore ankle but expect it to keep him out of the lineup for a few games. Craig Anderson should get a few starts if you are really desperate.
Peter Budaj/ Jose Theodore- This is a classic case of the expected #1 goalie unable to hold his job, while the underdog stands on his head with great play. Only this year it is Jose who came in as the #2, with Budaj expected to be the main starter, rolling along after a solid campaign last year. While Budaj has been average, Jose played himself into being one solid game away from getting his #1 status back. As a write this Jose has let in 3 goals in the first period, so expect the question marks to fly, and the platoon to continue.
Martin Gerber/ Ray Emery - Gerber has done everything he can to take advantage of the Ray Emery injury. He has started the season 6-1, but hasn’t just been coasting behind the offense in Ottawa, he has played as well as any goalie in the league in most of those 7 games. BUT, Ray Emery is the goalie of the future for this team, and earned his starting job with his play last season. Gerber comes off a game where he won but let in three goals, and Emery is ready to go. Expect a 50/50 platoon for the next couple weeks until Emery has his legs, and then Gerber will continue to lose more time, but still see a fair amount of starts if he remains hot. Ottawa is good enough that it is worth keeping both as long as you are checking on the expected starter status.
Johan Holmqvist- Is only the starter by default right now. He is playing very poorly, but his backups have been no better when they have entered the game. Expect Holmqvist to keep starting for now, but he is a poor play if you already have your required starts.
Goalies Situations to watch:
Toskala/ Raycroft- Toskala is beginning to get in a groove, and the Leafs brought him in. What was a platoon may be headed more in favor of Toaskala.
Huet/ Price- Huet will get the majority of the starts right now, but if you are in a keeper league grab Price. He has looked excellent in his two starts, and will while he will be getting the occasional start now that workload could increase if Montreal starts to falter at all.
Giguere- He is back and Anaheim has won two in a row for the first time all season, coincidence, I don’t think so. Giggy played well in both games. He will get the majority of starts as long as he stays healthy.
Hasek/ Osgood- Hasek has looked old so far. he got injured early and has not had a very good game yet. Meanwhile old man Osgood has won his first three starts. While Detroit wants to stick with the Dominator, this could become more of a platoon to keep both healthy.
