One week left before the kickoff of the regular season. This is crunchtime for all drafts and anyone looking for last minute player news or advice on players who have been complaining about injuries this preseason. This is a final week look at the most recent injuries which could have fantasy impact:
Alge Crumpler: Has been complaining about a number of ailments this preseason. He was back on the field for the last preseason game, catching 2 passes, so he appears ready to go, but all of these injury concerns in a year where Atlanta is just going through a disaster does not drive his value up. Don’t reach for Crumpler this year, only draft him if he starts to slide in the draft and you are getting him at great value.
Edgerrin James: Tweaked a hamstring in his last practice and leaft early. He’ll be getting all the carries this season, so this is just for rest more than anything. Don’t let it impact your draft.
Terrence McGee: If you draft IDP there may be value in McGee, but he suffered a concussion in his last preseason game, so slide him down a few notches on your rankings list. Concussions tend to linger in players making hits.
Devin Hester: The return specialist tunred part time receiver took a thunderous hit in Chicago’s last preseason game. Well Hester is back on the field already so watch his play. He is going undrafted much of the time, but is one of those players teams are ready to pounce on the FA wire for. Receiving yards plus return yards could be very positive if he sees action on offense.
Travis Henry: Returned to the practice field so he looks ready to go for the opener, but his only gametime was when he hurt his MCL, so he has had little time to get in synch with this offense. This preseason injury, along with his normal injury concerns have me feeling Henry is being drafted way to high in most drafts.
Kevin Jones: Jones says he will be playing in the opener, while the team says he is probably headed to the PUP. Still no definite word on this one. If you draft him you are either getting a steal because he is going so late, or a 6 week bust while you wait for him to come off the PUP.
Jon Kitna: With the signing of Calvin Johnson, Kitna has shot up the draft ranks so the recent news of him feeling twinges in his back have teams cringing who just took him as their QB1. Back pain is never good, especially in a QB who needs that strength to throw far and with accuracy. We will assume right now that this is just normal preseason pain, but if it begins to linger on make sure you have backup QB options because Kitna will be headed to the Bust label.
Donald Driver: Looked to severely hurt his foot in a preseason game, but team management is saying he should be ready for game 1. I thnk he’ll be a gamer and play, but this is his second injury just in the preseason. Driver’s age is starting to be a concern as inuries are mounting up. Draft normally, but if he has a few hot games early in the season I would trade him as I don’t think he will last all season playing at that level (plus his success is also dependent on Favre remaining healthy).
Chester Taylor: Is back on the field. Injury is no longer the concern, the platoon fight between him and Adrian Peterson is the issue.
Marques Colston: Has been resting a knee injury most of preseason, but that is what it has been - rest. He’ll be back on the field for all regular season games.
Plaxico Buress: Back pain has forced him out of much of the preseason. This injury and little faith in the Giants being able to generate a serious offense has to drop Plax down a few notches this year.
Thomas Jones: Will be back in the season opener. Have no preseason games to see how in shape or in rythm he is. He should be drafted no higher than where he is projected amongst running backs - 20-25.
Frank Gore: Won’t play in the preseason, and needs a customized padded glove to protect his hand but he will be ready to go for the regular season. I think you will get a slow start out of Gore, for the first few weeks, but he will catch fire once in rythm. It is just keeping him healthy long enough to get going.
